What Is Truth?

We live in an era where information on any subject is readily accessible. But what is truth? Have you found a bedrock of Truth on which to build your life? When you have found Truth, embrace it, live it, and share it!

The air in the courtroom was filled with tension. The case was difficult, and the judge was afraid to give the sentence. The consequences would be far-reaching. Although His accusers insisted that He be executed, the prisoner waited quietly without defending Himself. The judge asked, “What is truth?”

But without waiting for an answer, the judge went on. The prisoner was condemned in order to please the mob.

Pilate was the judge in the courtroom that day, and Jesus was the prisoner. How could Pilate know the truth? Was Jesus a king?

Yes, Jesus was the King of Glory. But Pilate rejected the truth.

Do you know what truth is?

Down through the ages men have longed to know the truth. Few have found it. Many saw the truth but felt it demanded too much. Pilate was confronted with the truth. He neglected the opportunity of a lifetime to accept it. That day when he condemned Jesus, Pilate was face to face with the Son of God, but he did not accept Him. He refused to know the truth.

What excuse do you give for not knowing the truth? Jesus Himself declared with humble frankness, “I am . . . the truth” (John 14:6). Knowing Jesus is knowing the truth.

My friend, did you know that to reject the truth is to be deceived? Believe in Jesus. He is Truth! “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18). These are Jesus’ words. He is Truth. He cannot lie. He is the Son of God.

Believe the words of Jesus. Study them, learn them, and follow them. They are the words of God. “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Read the Bible to understand the truth.

Jesus also said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31–32).

We all desire to be free. It is the truth that makes us free. Lies, superstitions, and half-truths keep us in bondage. Knowing Jesus and obeying His Word makes us free. Rejecting Jesus and His Word subjects us to chains of deception. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12).

If you are deceived today, repent of your sin and give yourself to Jesus. Truth cannot be found outside of Jesus. He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Do you want to know the Way, the Truth, and the Life? If so, Jesus is the answer. “As many as received him [Jesus], to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).

What is truth? In that crucial moment Pilate refused the answer. You cannot evade the question. To refuse the truth is eternal ruin. To accept it, you must renounce your selfish pride and sin, but eternal rewards in Glory will be yours.

You know the answer. Will you believe it? Will you accept it? Will you live it?
